Sleep Dentistry in Bowmanville

Anxiety about the dentist is extremely common. It’s also one of the main reasons people consider skipping their dental appointments, and even avoid complicated but necessary dental procedures. Of course, ignoring dental issues like cavities or broken and loose teeth can significantly impact your oral health and overall quality of life. Sleep dentistry is the solution—and we offer it to all of our patients at Clarington Dental Centre.

Sleep dentistry takes the anxiety away

Sleep dentistry uses sedatives to help anxious patients relax so dentists can provide the care they need without causing undue stress or anxiety. It’s so effective that most patients report remembering almost nothing of their procedure—no pain and no anxiety. It’s also ideal for patients who require a lot of dental work, have a low pain tolerance, or have trouble sitting still during dental procedures.

How sleep dentistry works

Clarington Dental Centre offers multiple different methods of sedative, including minimal sedation, laughing gas, conscious sedation, and more. Which sedative is best for you depends on a variety of factors—your dentist will discuss your options to help you choose the right type of sedative for you. The more anxious you are, the heavier sedation you’ll need in order to ensure you have a comfortable and safe experience.

What to expect on the day of your procedure

  • Your dentist or dental team will provide you with specific instructions to follow before arriving for your appointment. What instructions they provide will depend on what type of sedation you are getting.
  • Our dentists will explain the entire procedure in detail on the day of your first appointment so that you will feel comfortable during your treatment.
  • After taking the anesthesia, you will start to feel less anxious. You’ll be able to sit back, relax, and even take a short snooze while the dentist works on your teeth.

Regardless of what type of sedation you receive, you’ll be drowsy after your appointment. Since you’ll be impaired, make sure you have someone with you at your appointment so that you can get home safely. You should limit your activities until the sedation has completely worn off. For 24 hours after your procedure you should not drive, operate heavy machinery, consume alcohol, or stand up too quickly when getting out of bed.
