Process

What to Expect

We understand that dental appointments can be scary for some people. Many people avoid the dentist altogether because of anxiety. Nonetheless, skipping your regular dental visits will not benefit you in the long run.

That's why we offer sleep dentistry services. Our dentists will explain the entire procedure in detail on the day of your first appointment so that you will feel comfortable during your treatment. With sleep dentistry, we aim to reduce all anxiety in fear in our patients. We are the full sedation dentist that can answer any questions or concerns you have about dental procedures.

Before

On the day of your appointment, your dentist will speak to you about the different types of anesthesia we offer and help you determine which one is best for you.

During

After taking the anesthesia, you will start to feel less anxious. You’ll be able to sit back, relax, and even take a short snooze while the dentist works on your teeth.

After

When you wake up after your procedure, you may feel groggy. You should make sure you have someone to drive you home since you will still be under the effects of anesthesia.

  • What is sleep dentistry?

Sleep dentistry involves using sedatives to help anxious patients relax so that dentists can provide the care they need without causing undue stress or anxiety.

Sleep dentistry is so effective that most patients report remembering almost nothing of their procedure. They feel no pain and their anxiety disappears. This makes sleep dentistry a good choice for people with dental phobias.

Sleep dentistry may also be suggested for patients who require a lot of dental work, have a low pain tolerance, or have trouble sitting still during dental procedures. We are also the ideal cosmetic bonding dentist, which sleep dentistry can be paired with.

  • What are the different types of sleep dentistry?

Which sedative is best for you depends on a variety of factors. Before your appointment, your dentist will sit down with you and discuss your options to help you choose the right type of sedative that meets your needs. The more anxious you are, the heavier of sedation you will need in order to ensure you have a comfortable and safe experience.

Clarington Dental Centre offers multiple different methods of anesthesia, including minimal sedation, laughing gas, conscious sedation, and more. Speak to one of our staff members if you have immediate questions about anesthesia.

  • How can I prepare for my appointment?

Your dentist or dental team will provide you with specific instructions to follow before arriving for your appointment. What instructions they provide will depend on what type of sedation you are getting.

Regardless of what type of sedation you receive, you will likely be drowsy after your appointment. You should not return to work or school for the rest of the day, and you should limit your activities until the sedation has completely worn off.

Since you’ll be impaired, make sure you have someone with you at your appointment so that you can get home safely.

  • What things should I avoid after my appointment?

While sleep dentistry is more widespread, the use of anesthesia means that are still restrictions on what you can do following your appointment. You should avoid a few things for 24 hours after getting a sedation treatment. This includes:

    • Do not drive
    • Do not operate heavy machinery
    • Do not consume alcohol until the sedation has worn off
    • Don’t stand up too quickly when getting out of bed
    • Refrain from eating or consuming food and drinks that are too hot as your teeth will be sensitive
